DeSoto Fire District 8 is located in Northwest Louisiana and covers 430 square miles making it one of the largest fire protection districts in Louisiana. DeSoto Fire District 8 covers all areas surrounding the city of Mansfield, the Villages of Grand Cane and South Mansfield and the communities of Naborton, Carmel, Benson, Pelican, Evelyn, Rambin, Wallace, and Ranchland Acres. DeSoto Fire District 8 is proud to have achieved a class 4 insurance rating through Property Insurance Association of Louisiana. Currently the department has 15 staff firefighters, 4 staff captains, and a paid fire chief based out of the department's central station located just north of the city of Mansfield. We also have seven volunteer stations strategically placed throughout the fire district that can be accessed by volunteers when needed. Staff firefighters are divided into three shifts that work 24 hour shifts followed by 24 hours off. After working 5 shifts like this firefighters get 6 consecutive days off.
DeSoto Fire District 8's coverage area sits in the middle of the Haynesville Shale, one of the largest gas formations in the US. This discovery and subsequent drilling has filled the area with numerous drilling locations and pipeline right-of-ways. The district also has a few major industries in it's coverage area. International Paper is located in Northeast part of the district close to the Carmel community, CLECO and its affiliate Dolet Hills (a lignite mine) are located in the Naborton community.
As of June 2, 2010 225 gas rig permits have been issued in DeSoto Parish this year!
